Before creating our film we had previously looked and analysed other films to enable us to create our product, this helped us to develop our narrative and also to improve our character profiles.
Firstly, my film follows the conventions of a media product through our opening sequence as it introduced the main character straight away in the start, although the identity of the character was left a secret, we still used the opening sequence as an introduction to the film. This Is because myself and my group watched other media products and realised that the opening of the film and the closing of the film means a lot to the audience as it’s the only thing they seem to remember of the film – therefore we challenged the forms and conventions of real media products because we kept the identity of our character a secret to create mystery as well as it to be more fun; as it makes the audience anxious to see more. Therefore we used a slow tilt shot, to show the characters body and costume but ended the shot just at his neck to add more tension with the audience and our product. To develop the form of our opening sequence we decided that the opening setting should be at our main character HARRY’s house, so the audience could get a sense of his personality. To develop this view, we used a slow pan of his room, so the audience can see his room and how he acts, what he listens to, just the general feeling of how he is in his own natural habitat – BUT we still did not reveal his identity, as we wanted the audience to paint a picture of who it could be, make it more interesting and exciting. Such as the family movie “Big Mama’s House” where the identity of the officer was a mystery, just had quick, short shots of him putting on a watch , a tie, suit these are all connotations of a middle-class working male – the audience will gather this just by seeing what his wearing not by seeing his face.
Secondly, my characters follow the standard forms and conventions of real media products as my antagonist is a bully, while my protagonist is a nerd. Like usual media products, my antagonist bullies and physically harasses my protagonist. My bully is tall, built, dark, and aggressive, just has all the stereotypical attributes of a bully, which makes him even more of a deviant character. For example, we used a trekking shot when my protagonist walked past the antagonist, so the audience could see and sense the hostility between both characters, JACK was behind HARRY has he walked past – HARRY was as oblivious as anything while walking past JACK, but by the facial expression on both characters faces it is obvious to the audience that JACK is the antagonist and HARRY is the protagonist as even the costumes help represent this, as JACK is wearing all black, whereas HARRY is dressed very smartly. However, although in the beginning of our product, we may represent HARRY as the weak timid character however our product challenges the forms and conventions because our protagonist switches to an antagonist through character development, although he is not completely evil, he is still more powerful than JACK compared to the beginning. In majority of films the I watched in regards to bullies and victims, they usually ended with no real character development, the bully still bullies the victim, the victim may end up having more confidence than before but still not enough to overcome and conquer. Therefore, my team and I decided to switch it up and make our film a little more unique and different from the rest therefore we decided to make our victim powerful and even more stronger to the extent that the bully is now afraid of his own victim which contradicts all other media products regarding bullying, also generates a positive message to all ages of the family, that if anyone is getting bullied they can always overcome it.
Thirdly, our narrative follows the forms and conventions of media products as it is a basic narrative. Its is a family film which is opened to all members of the family, which puts no restriction on whom can or cannot watch it, which makes it much more marketable as there are no age limits. Our narrative follows the conventions of a family film because it is based in a school environment, which makes it easier for everyone to relate too, as everyone has been to school before – so the setting is a familiar environment which all members of the family institution would be familiar with. Secondly, the main theme of bullying is what runs predominantly throughout my film, which I feel is what everyone can relates too, however by watching Home Alone we didn’t want it to be too emotional. This is because from my media product last year, I and my team went with a very emotional sort of film – which was very serious and too boring that we had discovered in our audience feedback so in response we received lower grade too. Therefore, this year I had learnt from my mistakes and realised that going with a film that is too emotional, will a) Not target a larger audience
b) Too boring.
So we incorporated some of Home Alone ideas invested in pranks. This challenge the narrative of most anti-bullying movies as it usually shows the knock on negative effect it has on the victim, it never hardly shows the victim getting back and getting even – this is where the comedy element comes in. By watching Home Alone, Richard used a lot of pranks on the thieves, which was what made the film even more funny, therefore me and my team thought it would be even more exciting and funny, if HARRY created pranks for JACK. This challenges all bullying movies as it leaves it with a happy/funny ending rather than a sad one.

Question Two
After completing our film, I had realised that this is not the end, in order to create a successful film; your post-production must be very impressive. This is because, the audience are not going to be introduced the film straight away – we have to persuade them to watch our film which I personally say is the most hardest thing to do, as the audience must be interested in out post-production in order for them to watch our main production. Therefore, to enable to do this I decided to watch and research various posters and trailers. And one familiarity I noticed in each poster I focused on, was that they were all clips or parts of the film – this therefore makes it more easier for the audience to relate too as they are seeing what they had seen in the poster previously making them familiar with the text. Therefore, I decided not to use a photo-shoot, because firstly, it takes up time and secondly, I wanted to provide my audience with taste with what they are actually going to see. So by using shots from my actual film it makes it more realistic.
For example, within one of my posters I decided to use a close up shot of my protagonist, while his eyes are closed and his hands are gently placed in the centre of his face. However, I wanted to add more to my poster, show a little bit more, therefore I put a dark shadow to represent the dark antagonist. I decided to use my protagonist HARRY in the poster because he is the main character, therefore the audience should be informed to him straight away, however our antagonist JACK is also a very prominent character so I wanted him to be in the poster too, however didn’t have to be seen, so I made him the dark shadow – as the connotations of black is death, anger, loss, fear, night it just has very negative connotations therefore by applying this to my antagonist it makes it a bit more interesting to look at. I used this because my film is about bullying and although it is a comedy, it still has to get that view across to its audience, as bullying is a very serious subject. So to an extent, my poster could be argued to giving false impression, as it shows something emotional, whereas in actual fact my film is funnier and less serious. Therefore, the link between my poster and my film is that it highlights the emotional effect of bullying, and although that may not be seen in my film – the topic itself is emotional, therefore the poster should at least highlight that view.
Secondly, we also had to produce a film review. After looking at different film reviews I realised that they were all in formal context, even though some were about adventure and comedy for example Harry Potter, it is a more adventurous film targeted at teens – however the layout of their review was still very formal, because they have to be professional at the same time. I incorporated these ideas into my review; however I also wanted to make it a little bit more interesting to look at. This is why I decided to use a different colour for my text – I used the colour red simply because it is more engaging and a much brighter colour to look at in comparison to black and white. I used colour because my film is comedy and therefore it has to attract a very wide audience that would be captivated by extreme colours this is why I used red as its connotations of red is loud, danger, fun and excitement just makes it more interesting to look at, which was the same theme I was looking for, comedies usually have something interesting to look at, as its different and out of the ordinary.
Moving on my pitch was also a major way that I was able to advertise my product. This is because my film is a comedy genre; therefore this should be existent within my pitch, as the audience have to have a taste of what they will be seeing. This is why I embedded a clip from Home Alone in which showed the pranks that the protagonist was setting up – this was the exact concept myself and my team were going for, therefore by showing this clip to the audience it provides them with the conventions of a comedy and provides them with expectations that they we will be looking for, from my film, I also put in the video because it was funny and entertaining which will keep my audience entertained and not bored. I also put funny images on my slides too, this made it funny as well as informative, because not everyone is an intellectual learner some people favour the visual rather text, so by emplacing images it makes it easier to understand, nicer to look at and keeps my audience engaged and entertained. However, although my pitch was formal with my language, I decided to use different colours on my slides, I used yellow and lavender on each slide with black and red text. I did so because, I knew who my target audience was for my film, therefore I need to make sure I appeal to their interests. For example, if I had used a normal white slide with black text and no images – there is no creativity and no excitement there, instantly I have lost my audience as my Pitch did not attract them – so by using colours, images, clips it makes it much more exuberant and therefore makes them feel included.
Finally, I feel that the combination of my main product and my ancillary tasks was very effective; this was because I kept referring back to my production making sure there were solid connections with ancillary and product. For example, my poster, it was bright, eye catching but also very unreadable, which links in with my characters. Or my pitch, it is funny, entertaining but informative at the same time. This is why I feel that my product and my ancillary tasks have a very strong combination as its interesting and exciting to watch and look at.
For example, within one of my posters I decided to use a close up shot of my protagonist, while his eyes are closed and his hands are gently placed in the centre of his face. Questions Three
Audience feedback enables me to correct, perfect and improve my film. This is because, as we are all a team, it will be impossible for us to make accurate and unbiased predictions about our product, therefore, by having some feedback from the audience it helps us to make very useful and productive changes.
Our first idea was “Locked in My Mind”, which was taken from inspiration from “411”. Our narrative was very interesting and exciting as it was about a girl setting a curse on her boyfriend, and then during the film we would explore the miseries of the curse she set on him. However we received feedback from our teachers that this film idea will be too complicated to achieve as we wanted to do it in school – it would be hard to get classrooms that were free, and then timing, location, school kids it was just too much. Therefore, by presenting our first film idea to my teacher really helped us, as it provided us with relevant feedback and enabled us to construct another idea. We then developed another film idea which was called “Adventures of Babashola” , this was completely different from the first film idea we had, it was no longer horror, we had moved into a more adventure approach – this was based on a Nigerian boy looking for treasure in a forest and the film will just follow his treasure hunt. However, I teachers did support this narrative but I asked my friends and my team asked their friends and they all found the narrative boring and it just did not appeal to anyone, therefore we had to change it, this is because if it could not appeal to our age category then there was just no pointy producing a film that your fellow age-mates would not enjoy. We then finally came up with “Fix-Up, Look Hard”. As we were left without any movie ideas at all, we were thinking of what we could do, the first idea we had was just too complex and drastic and impossible to make on our budget and location, our second idea was possible and easy to shoot, but the risk of it looking mature was our main problem, and the fact that none of our groups liked it either – so we thought to combine both ideas together and come up with one idea – so we put in elements of !Locked In My Mind” and “Adventures of Babashola” and created “FIX UP, LOOK HARD” which became our final product. Audience feedback is very important when it comes to narrative – this is because it allows you to the see the flaws in your work and allows you to improve them or just to move on to something else. In regards to my narrative, I would definitely say that audience feedback enabled myself and my group to come up with a even better and stronger narrative that enabled us to form “FIX UP, LOOK HARD”.
Secondly, I received feedback on my pitch. I learnt that my pitch was very informing and it provided the audience with very relevant information about my film and the conventions of a comedy film. However, what my pitch lacked was that it was not creative enough. I showed my pitch to my class and they all agreed that it was not creative, we wasn’t really selling the film we were just explaining the film to the audience. Therefore, the second time we presented it, I added more picture to the slides, added colour to all my slides and even inserted a clip of Home Alone so my audience could enjoy it. The clip of Home Alone was about the setting up and the outcome of the pranks so it was very interesting for the audience to watch as it was funny seeing grown “idiots” getting played by a 10 year old boy – this is the same in my film, a bully is getting bullied by a victim, so we showed this clip of the film not only to make it interesting but to show the idea and theme we were going for within our film. The audience enjoyed our new pitch and found it very informing as well as exciting. Therefore the audience feedback, was very useful as it helped us to understand where we needed to improve, although our pitch was very informing it was not entirely interesting, so from my feedback I learnt that when presenting and selling your film its best to do it in a way that would capture your target audience.
Moving on, during post production I showed my film to a variety of people. I showed it to a Year 9 girl that said “The actor was not enthusiastic enough for the film – he was the main let down.
Was a bit too quick could have been a bit longer, would have more of an effect. Camera shots were not the best sometimes”. Her positive comments were “It was extremely funny, I jus couldn’t stop laughing. Although the actor was a bit bad – the narrative kind of suited him and made it sort of alright. The whole storyline was precise and accurate – I understood the film completely. The sound had a lovely great effect too at some occasions”
I then asked a boy in Year 11 and his comments were “The actor was a disgrace; he was completely just boring, made the film quit boring, looked like he was being force. The shots and camera movement was bit too slowly at times – like I yawned a few times just staring at it. Sound was alright – but inappropriate at times (natural sound could have been included make it seem more real and less like a film)”. However, his positives were, “Funniest film I have watched created by unproffessionals. The pranks was not all that funny, it was simply the reaction OF the pranks that made me personally laugh. The whole school theme was just a great idea – made me relate to it much more. It’s a bit of a fantasy – a geek becoming a bully – could never happen in reality but the idea of it, is what makes it even funnier.
I then wanted to get a few views from the younger audience, so I asked a little boy from Year 6 and his said “It was bit too dull – no bright colours. It was too exciting for me. There wasn’t enough fast pace movement.” Then his positives were that “It was really, really funny. I liked and enjoyed watching it. The characters are so stupid which made it even much funnier. I could actually relate to it, as I have seen people get bullied in school, but never seen a victim try to get back at the bully, that was just wonderful.”
I then finally asked a Year 13 student, which said “It was really, really funny. I liked and enjoyed watching it. The characters are so stupid which made it even much funnier. I could actually relate to it, as I have seen people get bullied in school, but never seen a victim try to get back at the bully, that was just wonderful.” But, on the flip side “The funniest thing I ever watched. Made complete sense. The fact that you completely switched roles with character by turning the bully into a whip and the whim into a bully was just genius – I would have never expected that. I would love to watch it at a real cinema; it would just give me pure jokes”.
From the feedback I received in regards to my post-production I understood that the acting in my film was very poor. I wasn’t able to choose the actors for my film therefore; I had to accept people from the next class. However, as my film is a silent film – his acting skills did not really matter, but the lack of acting skills was still very much existent through out the entire film. This was the even more reason why my sound had to be perfect, as the acting skills were not so good, i decided to make sure that the soundtracks we used were very entertaining and capturing that could almost divert the audience’s attention, which was what we recieved in our feedback, that the sound was very good and funny at the same time.
Finally, from my audience feedback i have learnt a lot more things about my film, some positives and some negatives. Feedback enables myself and my group to change things that we personally my not see. For example continuinity, i remeber in one shot there was a washing up liquid bottle, but then in the next shot the bottle had dissapeared – it was a person that was watching our film during post-production that realised that, therefore we re-shooted and it looked normal. In addition, not only does feedback help develop new ideas and praise the positives of a film, but it also helps to improve the film by giving relavant suggestions as to how to do things. My audience feedback, personally has taught me how to accept comments and use them constructively within my work, it has also allowed me to view my own product from a different position and angle – more optimistic, and it has taught me how to produce a better film, as peoples comments make a very big difference in a film, therefore by listening to the audience it helps improve the film – as you are giving them what they want.
Our first idea was “Locked in My Mind”, which was taken from inspiration from “411”. Question Four
New technologies are growing rapidly around the world and are being used in most movies, for example AVATAR which used the new SONY HD Camera, which had the highest clarity and made the film look good. Although in my school we may not have had the best camera we still used a various amount of other technologies to help my film.
Firstly, pre-production we had to research other narratives, the only way in which we could do so was by watching other films that had the similar narrative/genre like ours. Therefore YoTube was definitly one of the most helpful online technology that helped us. As we were able to watch a variety of different films, such as, Home Alone, Zack and Cody, Phineas and Ferb, Dennis The Menace and loads more. By watching all these films, it also helped us to develop character profiles, it allowed us to see how we would like our own character to be like. For example, our protagonist character came from Home Alone, someone quick-witted, sly, funny but very exceptionally intellingent, just not the stereotypical character, we wanted someone different, that is why Home Alone was our main focus point for our film. YouTube certainly helped us to create our narrative, as we searched and watched loads of different narratives, even a few made my ammatures in a forest, so we could see how we should not do things – this was partially the reaosn why we no longer went along with the idea of “Adventures of Babashola” as we thouight to shoot a film withoin a forest, with a camera and sound equipment with twop actors, could look like a very big mess and very ammature as we had seen a few videoa on facebook like it. So although technologies like the interenet and YouTube help us to create film ideas, they also help us into scrapping certain film ideas.
Secondly, during my post-production stage Premier Adobe was the software i used to digitise and edit my film. Personally, at AS i wasnt too familiar with the technology and did not know how to use the software very well for basic tasks as digitising, as technologies are developing rapidly, i did not know how to use them very well. But at A2 all this had to change, especially as i took on the role of director, i digitised my entire film, because i enjoyed it and then did the majority of the editing as io find editing very interesting. I used Premier Adobe to help construct my film, without Premier Adobe it would have been impossible for me to create my film, as i had to sequence shots, cut shots, erase shots and just make it into a movie, the software Premier is used to create movies, it was complicated at first, but once i practiced doing it again and again it was very much exciting. I used Premier Adobe at my construct change, because it wa sthe software that helped me to create my film.
Thirdly, the camera we used was a Cannon HD Camera, which had great clarity. By using a camera, we were able to take a range of shots from different angels and different positions. For example, one of the shots that i chose specifically was the head-shot, it was just something different that you dont see in most movies like the usualm casual mid-shot and long-shots i wanted to make it a little bit more interesting. Also trekking shots, by using the Cannon HD we were able to get tracks that we could place the camera upon and make a trekk shot, it just makes the shot look so much proffessional, we also used this shot within our film, the pace of the shot is slows as well – which adds even more affect to the shot too. We used the Cannon HD Camera to take a variety of shots from different angles and places, such as the point of view shot we took when our protagonist had overcome – the camera was wobily and on the edge – which made it seem even more real and gave it that natural effect, which we were going for. The camera helped with our construction because it enabled us to take the the great shots and allowed us to position it differently, by adjusting the zoom and the auto-focus if we wanted a blur effect or not.
Also, i used photoshop to create my posters. I had never used photoshop in my life, so i was completly unfamiliar with the programme and how it worked, however as i started to practice it, and by my friend that does photography A2 teaching me how to use it, i became a little bit more confident with the software. We had to produce three posters all on photoshop, therefore they had to look proffesional and eye-catching. By using photo-shop i was able to erase a background by one click, use a laser too and cut up a image and i could adjust the lightness/darkness/brightness of an image, this is what i did with my first poster, i made it darker and adjusted the brightness to give it a shadowy effect. Photoshop helped alot during my post-production while creating my posters as it enabled me to use alot more different tools and make my poster a whole much more interesting to look at.
Lastly, there is the blog which helped me to track my progress online. It was basically a online diary which enabled me to upload all my work in a structured format where it could be easily accessed by my teachers, class mates and examiners. It was also very useful as i was able to connect to the blog from home, making it very accessible and easy to upload things at any time too. I used the blog to put up all my own independent research as well as my evaluation questions, main production and other media related contents. The blog, i would personally say has allowed me to evaluate my own work, as i am able to access my AS blog and see where i went wrong, and how it could be corrected which makes it again very reliable and easy to use.

SCRIPT
Script (Self-Defence)
Scene 1: Opening Bedroom
It is morning and our main character HARRY is getting ready for school. We show the alarm clock goes off and his hand pressing the clocks, then we show our character getting ready for college. Through is costume the audience will be able to detect that he is most likely a “geek” as his costume represents the stereotypical image of nerds e.g. ties, braces and dotted shirts.
The identity of our character is kept a mystery as we do not show or reveal his face – all the audience can see is his costume and body. (Soundtrack). Then we switch location and HARRY is on his way to school, we do not show his journey – all we show is the school playground via an establishing shot. While HARRY is walking through the playground he then trips over his shoelaces – this then gains attention from his bullies as the camera focuses on them.
All in all HARRY finally enters the building and walks into class with a gloomy look. A few minutes later we see other footsteps rushing in to class. Then the door slams to represent that class has started and we show the school bell ringing which indicates that school has started.
Scene 2: MEDIA BLOCK
Suddenly, we see our protagonist run out of class in a fright, and straight after him we see the two bullies which the audience was introduced to in the beginning catch up with him. They then grab him up against the wall and pour water all down his hair and mess it up (they then peanut him and do other bullying-like things) then walk away jokily.
HARRY is upset and emotional over this trauma he has just experimented so goes off to apply for community service as he has no friends to confide in him. (Present this by a hand giving him the “community service” card)
As HARRY is doing his community service he begins to draw and include all the terrible things that have ever occurred in his life.
As HARRY is drawing the only things that he seems to draw are in regards to JACK, with this thought he gets frustrated and pushes a chair into the cupboard without thought. Exactly soon after this happens everything on top of the cupboard falls unto the floor.
Scene 3: Media Office
Coincidently a magazine about pranks and jokes falls down on to the table that HARRY is sitting on
HARRY then reminisces what happened to him earlier this morning with JACK and gets angry, he then looks down and sees the magazine which is filled with pranks and jokes.
Harry then turns to audience (camera) and has a smirk on his face to show he has an idea.
Scene 4:
Later on, on that day HARRY begins to go through the magazine and sees all the funny pranks that are included in the magazine.
In relation to this HARRY then hatches a cunning plan to seek revenge on JACK by producing a series of pranks. HARRY then lists the pranks as followed:
Puts Superglue on the chair that JACK will be sitting on.
Slippery liquid outside floor of classroom, so when JACK finally gets of his chair he will fall over).
Place clear tape across the outside of a door from top to bottom
He then runs out frantically through the classroom (media room) corridor.
Scene 5
The next day HARRY comes into school, with a new personality. JACK is still very angry with what happened to him yesterday and happy slaps HARRY to gain his authority back.
But HARRY does not take it lightly, when JACK turns around HARRY pushes him down to the floor, giving JACK the macho look, and we now see the reverse of character personality - now HARRY has found his identity, and as he walks off JACK is left on the floor representing him as the weaker character and HARRY gaining status.
